One of the decisions you'll have when choosing your netbook is the size of the display. The Asus 1001PX has a 10.1" display. As with TVs and computer monitors, this is measured diagonally across the screen. Netbook screen sizes range from around 7" to around 12". While a 7" screen might sound tiny compared to your normal computer display, you'll be surprised how detailed and easy to read even the smallest netbook displays is. Netbooks with smaller displays are more portable. Netbooks with larger screens are more suited for those planning to use it for longer periouds of work. You'll need to weigh up how you'll be using your netbook and whether a smaller portable case is more important to you.
As with choosing a laptop or a desktop PC, one of the most important things you'll have to think about is the CPU. This is the 'brain' of your netbook and affects every operation it undertakes. The 1001PX uses the Atom N450 processor - a special processor designed for mobile devices such as Netbooks. One of the it's major plus points is that it's highly efficient with netbook battery life, giving you more time per charge. The Atom integrates graphics, display and memory controller into one compact chip. You can learn more about the Intel Atom Processor at the Intel Website. You can also download a free pdf containting information about how the Intel Atom is used in netbooks.
The Asus 1001PX has an LCD screen that uses LED backlighting technology. LED backlighting is used in TVs, computer monitors, netbook and laptop computers. It is an energy efficient form of backlighting. LED stands for light emitting diodes and is an alternative to the older method of 'tube' lighting. This older method of illumination requires more energy and can produce patchy brightness and poor black colour on screen. LED backlighting produces excellent blacks, does away with patches on the display, and produces excellent levels of contrast and detail previously not possible. LED lighting also requires less room, reducing the weight and profile of the display.
Windows 7 Starter is one of the flavours of Microsoft's operating system that is only available on Netbooks. This version of Windows 7 is a stripped down, streamlined version designed to run efficiently on the Asus 1001PX and other netbooks. There's a full page of information on it here.
