Upscaling takes a non-HD video source (such as an old style DVD) and displays it correctly on an HD television. It increased the pixel count in the non-HD video so that it matches your HDTV. While a standard DVD is never going to match the incredible level of detail offered on a Blu-ray disc, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good DVDs look using upscaling. They appear sharper, clearer and somewhere between a DVD and Blu-ray quality.
BD-Live works with Blu-ray players and the Internet to bring you extra content related to the disc you've bought or rented. So what kinds of things can you get with BD-live?
Who is BD-Live important to? Well if you've always enjoyed watching the extra features found on DVD movies (and later on Blu-ray movies) then you'll likely get a kick out of BD live. To get it, you'll need a Blu-ray player, such as the BDP-320 that's BD Live compatible. (Most are these days) and a broadband internet connection. To get the best out of BD-Live, you'll need to update your player with the latest firmware. This can be done at the manufacurer's website. There's a really good page from the Sony website here showing some examples of what BD-Live can do.
DivX is a method of compressing movie files. It's main strengths are that it has a small file size but manages to keep a high movie quality. Because DivX is so popular, many televisions, DVD, Blu-ray and other video devices now support the format. The BDP-320 supports DivX playback meaning that you can play any movies on it that were encoded in this format. Find out more about DivX here.
DolbyHD does for audio what HD does for video, offering a perfect 'HD'sound quality. As Blu-ray discs have a lot more room on them than old DVD formats it's possible to have a much higher quality audio on the disc. The sound you hear is 100% uncompressed so there's no distortion and a huge difference in the quality.
Here's a quick overview of some of the highlights:
You can read more about Dolby TrueHD on the officical site here. And a more in-depth article here.
Ethernet ports are a way to connect hardware and audio visual equipment to a computer network. Superceded by 'wi-fi connections' that most people have in their homes and offices now, ethernet ports do the same job but with a wire instead of a wireless connection. Ethernet ports accept RJ-45 connections. You can find out more about how Ethernet connections and networks work here.
