The Sony BDVEF200 is what's called full HD, which is often written as 1080p. This means that it supports the highest level of detail. A full HD resolution spans 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 1080p refers to the number of vertical lines that the product can show. 1080p is also a widescreen resolution. There's a huge, exhaustive article at HDTV test which has everything you'd want to know about 1080p, as well as a good question and answers section at the end.
The BDVEF200 has 2 x HDMI inputs. HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and is a standard used for audio / visual equipment. Like the older scart, HDMI is a port that allows you to connect things like Blu-ray players and games consoles to your television. Unlike scart, they're very easy to plug in - and take up a fraction of the space scart leads do. HDMI allows for HD devices to send high resolution information to the television. HDMI is an uncompressed digital signal, as opposed to previous analog interfaces such as S-Video, component video and composite video. In short, HDMI is the best way to connect your AV equipment and is going to be with us a good way into the future. There's a really good blog post over at Hi-Def hardware if you'd like to find out more.
2.1 channel sound is a stereo sound system used on home theatre systems. It uses two stereo speakers and a subwoofer to play sound. It aims to create surround sound without the need for rear speakers. It's designed to produce a rich movie theatre sound without extra speakers and wires.
There's nothing better than enjoying a film on your home cinema system. And if you're a fan of the movies then you'll want to make sure you buy a television and blu-ray player that supports 24p True Cinema. (Sometimes called 24p Real Cinema). The BDVEF200 is capable of 24p playback. This means that the blu-ray player shows each frame of the film at a the exact rate it was filmed at. You may not have noticed in the past but older TVs weren't capable of this and had to subtly adjust the speed of the movie to match the TV. 24p shows films exactly at the same rate you'd get in a movie theatre. The reason this matters is that the movie will play much smoother with 24p.
BD-Live works with Blu-ray players and the Internet to bring you extra content related to the disc you've bought or rented. So what kinds of things can you get with BD-live?
Who is BD-Live important to? Well if you've always enjoyed watching the extra features found on DVD movies (and later on Blu-ray movies) then you'll likely get a kick out of BD live. To get it, you'll need a Blu-ray player, such as the BDVEF200 that's BD Live compatible. (Most are these days) and a broadband internet connection. To get the best out of BD-Live, you'll need to update your player with the latest firmware. This can be done at the manufacurer's website. There's a really good page from the Sony website here showing some examples of what BD-Live can do.
DolbyHD does for audio what HD does for video, offering a perfect 'HD'sound quality. As Blu-ray discs have a lot more room on them than old DVD formats it's possible to have a much higher quality audio on the disc. The sound you hear is 100% uncompressed so there's no distortion and a huge difference in the quality.
Here's a quick overview of some of the highlights:
